Once upon a time, knowledge was power. Now it’s autocomplete.

In the age of large language models, the threshold for “knowing something” has radically shifted. You don’t need to remember the answer — you just need to know what to ask. AI will fill in the rest. But as we grow more comfortable leaning on artificial intelligence for answers, predictions, even strategy, one uncomfortable question rises to the surface:

Are we outsourcing too much thought — and with it, too much authority?

The Expert is Now a Prompt Engineer

Historically, expertise was earned through study, trial, failure, and repetition. A cardiologist’s knowledge was built over decades. A constitutional lawyer honed their craft through case law and lived debate. These were disciplines of depth.

But today, a curious novice with access to a fine-tuned AI can simulate the outputs of expertise in seconds. With the right prompt, the right plugin, and enough confidence, anyone can “sound” like an expert.

This illusion is seductive — and dangerous. Not because the answers are necessarily wrong, but because the critical thinking that usually underpins expertise has been decoupled from the output. We’re bypassing the rigorous process that used to justify why something was correct.

From Knowledge Hierarchies to Knowledge Flattening

One consequence of AI's rise is what I call knowledge flattening: the collapse of hierarchical distinctions between amateur and expert, between novice and master.

On the surface, this seems democratizing. Isn’t it a good thing that more people can access high-quality information? Of course. But when the process of understanding is replaced by the convenience of generation, the risk isn’t just error — it’s overconfidence.

The problem isn’t just that AI can hallucinate facts. The deeper problem is that people often can’t tell the difference between AI-generated insight and human-derived expertise. If everyone appears to be an expert, then no one truly is.

The Fragility of Trust

In this new era, trust is no longer built on credentials. It’s built on presentation — how polished the answer looks, how fast it arrives, how well it’s phrased. We trust AI because it speaks in confident, articulate prose. But we forget that eloquence is not the same as evidence.

This erodes a key pillar of society: epistemic trust. When AI answers drown out human expertise in public discourse, we risk delegitimizing those with lived, hard-won knowledge. It’s not just bad for experts — it’s bad for decision-making at every level.

Toward Cognitive Co-Stewardship

The solution is not to reject AI — but to reframe our relationship with it. Instead of using AI to replace thought, we must use it to augment it. We must become co-stewards of cognition, where humans provide context, skepticism, and judgment — and AI provides acceleration, synthesis, and memory.

We need new social contracts around AI-augmented expertise:

  • Transparent sourcing: What’s AI-derived, and what’s human-informed?
  • Auditability: Can we trace the reasoning path behind a recommendation?
  • Respect for discipline: Expertise still matters, even if AI can imitate it.

Don’t Just Get the Answer. Learn the Why.

We’re entering a world where the speed of answers is inversely related to the depth of understanding. In this environment, it’s tempting to always ask the machine. But if we do that too often, we risk forgetting how to think for ourselves — and worse, we risk forgetting why it mattered in the first place.

AI may give us answers. But only humans can provide meaning.

And if we lose that — if we become mere consumers of thought instead of thinkers ourselves — then we may wake up one day surrounded by information but starving for wisdom.
